WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

My oh my, that Evermillion sure is powerful, to be able to destroy a building and cause a landslide in a matter of seconds. I wouldn’t be surprised if she is actually the most powerful character in the series, perhaps more so then Kazane herself. Kazane’s reaction was funny. I seriously would not want to get on the wrong side of her. I like Evermillion already. My initial thoughts were that she looked and acted like a wicked witch from a fairy tale. However, up until now this hasn’t been the case. I especially like the way she told Honoka off as he kept on doubting Kagari’s ability, which caused her to be petrified by Medusa.

Those kissing on the cheek scenes were lovely and my favourite part of this volume.

I did cringe somewhat when Kagari made Takamiya the School Council President by abusing her own authority as “princess”. I did laugh but I cringed through embarrassment as I felt empathy for Takamiya. If I was in his position, I wouldn’t know where to put my face. Haha. Touko was the only one in the council team that didn’t show any animosity towards Honoka when he was made the President. I actually thought that Ayaka was going to kick her out of the team as I got the impression that she didn’t like Touko very much. I’m glad she stayed part of the council.

Oh boy, Kasumi… she’s very brave to try and take out Ayaka. I think the tranquiliser would have worked if Ayaka hadn’t had a connection with Honoka. I do wonder about Kasumi’s obsession with her brother though, it’s quite extreme. I didn’t like the way she shouted at her mum though. Granted, the mum’s sensitivity is cute but I don’t think shouting at her was very nice. Honoka was right to scold her.

I laughed hardest when Ayaka spotted the teddy bear carrying a tied up Honoka. Something like that should have been more dramatic with sound effects, but yet, it felt very casual. To me, that’s what makes it more hilarious. What I especially found funny was at the end page when Ayaka bribed Touko to hand over her seat as vice president.

Medusa is quite an ok character, she seems fairly laid back. Probably a little bit too laid back at times. Her underlings, Tanpopo and co, are severely weak. I don’t even know why they bother to get involved as you just know they’re going to lose. Ayaka doesn’t even see them as threats, thus choosing to ignore them, even when they went out of their room. I don’t even see them as villains, even if they are tower witches.

…oh dear. Kazane has finally discovered that Medusa and her underlings are living in Honoka’s house.

I’m really looking forward to the fight of Ayaka with Medusa’s form to fight against Kazane. I reckon that’s going to be a clash of two power houses right there. I also get quite engaged with Kazane’s intensity, it’s like she’s roaring when she shouts. She’s the type who wears her heart on her sleeve and is very expressive, quite the opposite of her daughter in fact. Anyway, I think I’m right in thinking that Medusa indirectly blackmailed Ayaka into combining their bodies together…

My reason is that Medusa knows that the first stage of Honoka’s powers [Evermillion] has been released. If Kazane finds out then that means that Honoka could be sealed and Ayaka wouldn’t want that, and I don’t think Honoka would either. Plus, Medusa, being the tower witch, will probably grass Honoka up since she actually witnessed Evermillion’s appearance. So, in order to keep Medusa quiet, Ayaka probably offered herself as Medusa’s vessel. I wonder what’s going to happen there. It’s going to be good, whatever may happen next.

Witchcraft Works Thanks for Reading

I’m really enjoying the manga version of Witchcraft Works; I especially like the back pages and facts about the story. I’m not sure if I prefer the anime version or manga version at this moment, I just think that they both have their own charm. During Evermillion’s appearance I pictured her theme music that was aired in the anime. I find it really catchy and exciting; it gives you the vibe that a strong character has made his/her presence known. It suits Evermillion very well. =)

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

One day I decided to give Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun a watch. This is a really fun show. There were plenty of moments that made me laugh. Most of them did involve Nozaki and Mikoshiba but as far as shocked reactions go, I liked Sakura’s the best. =D I especially liked the moment when Nozaki hijacked Kashima from her flock of fans and they chased after him whilst he was pushing Kashima on that weird trolley thing. Haha.

As a fellow illustrator I did take to this show and the character Nozaki, quickly. I can relate to Nozaki in plenty of ways. I love to take pictures of nature and objects and use them for reference for when I draw backgrounds in my pictures. I don’t take pictures of people though, not without asking permission first. The only difference is that I’m not quite as adventurous or experimental as Nozaki is. Haha. It’s good to use real life nature and people as reference but sometimes I think using your imagination can be just as good, better in some cases. =) I still enjoy Nozaki’s social experiments for manga references though. They’re my favourite parts of the show.

All the characters are really nice. I thought I wasn’t going to like Mikoshiba as I thought he was going to be cocky but it turns out that he’s super shy around people he’s not familiar with. In some ways I can relate, I used to be very silent and stiff whenever I met someone new. I’m not as bad now but sometimes I do get nervous when I meet someone new. My thoughts changed on him immediately. He’s a really cool character and I find it amusing that Nozaki based his heroine on his personality. It’s hilarious, I actually wonder if Mikoshiba realised that the heroine is based on him? It doesn’t seem like it.

I was fooled a little bit at first by Kashima’s boyish demeanour as I didn’t realise she was a girl until I saw her wearing a skirt. She’s very charming in her own unique way and I don’t see any faults in her at all. That’s why I do think Hori is harsh when he hits her in comical ways. I can see from his point of view why he does but I still think it’s unjustified.^^/

My favourite character is Sakura. I find her to be cute and very lovable as well. Her big eyes and hair bows are the first thing that I noticed about her, with a nice shade of orange as well. =) She’s always nice, even during her shocked reactions. Haha. She got to know Nozaki when she started to help him with his manga, and I think she started to like him even more and accepted all of his…unique quirks. Haha. I want to make a shout out to Yukari too. She’s a very sweet young lady and if this show ever got a sequel, I would love to see her more.

I think I got used to the charm of the show quite quickly. When the moment looks as though Nozaki is going to compliment or confess to Sakura, it turned out to be a big misunderstanding. I was a bit conflicted at these parts. In one way I felt sorry for Sakura but in another way I found it hilarious. I did like their moment in the last episode though, with the fireworks. I genuinely thought Nozaki was replying to Sakura’s confession, however, it turned out that he just misheard. Still, I was happy that Sakura was able to get some alone time with Nozaki and for me the show couldn’t have ended in a better way.

Nozaki and Sakura

I have recently watched the latest WWE Raw and the WWE Fastline pay-per-view. I’m very excited about the prospect of Sting vs Triple H at Wrestlemania. At this moment I’m getting Goosebumps every time WWE are talk about Sting. I must admit and say that I always had doubt that Sting would ever go to WWE. Now he has. I’m very happy. =) My favourite match of the night was Daniel Bryan vs Roman Reigns. I actually do think that was my favourite Roman Reigns’ match.

Oh. I also learned that Inori Minase is going to voice Hestia from…inhaling…Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon? Phew, that’s always difficult to say in one breath. Haha… Anyhow, I’m excited about this. She was the same voice actor who voiced Mirai Nazukari from Locodol. I liked her voice for Mirai and I anticipate that she’s going to give Hestia a really charming voice. She’s very innocent and endearing when she gets excited but mature when she needs to be. I think she’ll do a very good job indeed. It makes me even more excited for the anime. =)

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon Light Novel Volume One Review

Dungeon Girls Front Cover Light Novel Vol 1

This is the first time that I read a Light Novel without any indication as to what the story might be about. I just read the summary and ordered it via amazon. I decided to share my thoughts and how I visualised each scene. =)

PS, I apologise for the long title. As far as I’m aware there’s no abbreviation to this title so I felt that it was necessary to keep the title long for now. =)

  1. SYNOPSIS

Bell Cranel is among the adventurers that fight in the “Dungeon” which is an underground labyrinth that is part of a city called Orario. However, unlike most adventurers, Bell’s main goal is not fame or fortune, but to meet a bundle of pretty girls, thanks to the influence of his Grandfather. Will he be able to meet pretty girls or will he get eaten alive in the “Dungeon”….?

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

Prologue

It’s quite short so I can’t really comment much on this. I understood that some lad has been saved by this super strong girl from a Minotaur. She’s called Aiz Wallenstein with golden eyes and hair. Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon, the boy asks… my personal opinion is… no, in the slightest.

Chapter One

By what I’ve gathered there’s this adventurer called Bell Cranel and his goal is to, well…go into dungeons to pick up cute girls. He was inspired to do this by his wonderful “Gramps.” It’s a bonus by going into dungeons as well as powering up.

Along the way he goes into these guilds to do commissions and often meets his good friend, Eina. I think she’s an elf who works as a receptionist?

He gets these power ups from his Goddess called Hestia. Gods like Hestia are from this place called “Tenkai” whilst normal humans like Bell are called “Genkai.” It seems like the Gods want to live alongside normal people as they become bored being “Gods”. They travelled down to Earth or Genkai and gathered “children” for their own Familiars.
I was a bit confused at first. At first I thought they were brother and sister but it turns out that Bell is part of Hestia’s familiar. Hestia has the power to “level” Bell “up”. Strangely, he has this unique ability of in which Hestia is keeping Bell in the dark of. I’m not really sure as to why this might be.

Chapter Two

There is a typical cliché moment right at the beginning when Bell wakes up. “Huh? What’s this on top of me?” He pulls the covers up and surprise, surprise a pretty girl was on top of him. It should get old but to me it’s always charming when it happens to different characters in different stories. I liked how Bell responded to try and move in the gentlest way so he didn’t wake Hestia up. For some reason I can see the anime milking this scene and making him jump like scared rabbit, no pun intended. I hope they keep this scene of where he gets out of his “predicament” in a calm manner as it’s a bit unusual for guys, in this type of story, to act this way. I wonder if Hestia often sleeps on top of him?

I got a little confused as to why Hestia became uptight and pouty towards Bell. I immediately put it down to her having a bad day all until she said “go have fun someplace else.” It made me think. I think when Hestia reads Bell’s levels on his back she can sort of see what he did during the day and week.

Not so long before Bell interacted on friendly terms with this Syr girl… this made me think that Hestia saw this and got jealous. It all started to make sense to me. There’s no denying that she likes him, but on what level? Family love? Or is it much more than that? This makes me wonder as well if she is jealous of this Aiz girl. The one who saved Bell.

A sad moment happened right at the end involving the Loki Familiar…I really like Aiz and in my opinion she’s in with the wrong Familiar. I knew she was a good person to begin with as she saved Bell. I hoped she wasn’t arrogant and this chapter confirmed that she isn’t… I do wonder if something could happen between her and Bell? She recognised him a little bit from his eyes and hair when he ran off. If she knew him quite well then that must mean he’s been in her mind. I anticipate that they’ll meet again by the end of this book.

I thought Bell was going to confront this arrogant man from the Loki Familiar. To me, I think he did the right thing to take himself out of the situation rather than start a fight. But, if it was me, I would have controlled my emotions better and pay attention to the pretty maid next to me but hey that’s just me. =D

Chapter Three

I enjoyed the fight between Bell and those… wall shadows. I couldn’t really picture the wall shadows very well. In my head I pictured them as pray mantis. Anyone know Schyfer from Pokemon? Schyfer is like a pray mantis. I sort of pictured the wall shadows like him but a dark version of him. I also replaced Schyfer’s head with the letter “V”. Haha.

I’ll be interested to see what they look like in the anime as I get the feeling that my imagination is totally off the mark. Haha.

Bell is getting a bit of a power up. Perhaps this is something to do with what Hestia saw on his back in Chapter One. Rapid Growth. Since he is dodging and defending a lot I wouldn’t be surprised if he continues to get stronger.

Chapter Four

I’m really growing on Hestia. The picture I have of her in my head is becoming clearer and clearer. I find her to be really cute. Her clothes are cute too. By the way she acts, dresses and represents herself I do get the impression that she is the youngest out of all the gods. It’s incredibly sweet how she actually went to this God’s party for Bell’s benefit rather than have a good time. I decided that after Chapter Four, Hestia is my favourite character in the story.^^/

I can’t really make up my mind if she’s mature or childish. I’m under the impression that she’s a little bit of both. She is carefree and playful during the day but she’s mature when she needs to be, I.E., when Bell is in trouble. So, I deduce that Hestia acts in certain ways depending on the situation and who she is spending her time with.

By the way, Hestia’s name can also mean altar and fireplace. If I recall the dialogue correctly she and Bell live in the underground of the church near the altar part. I wonder if there’s a deliberate connection there. All the gods seem to have different names. Hestia is named after a Greek goddess whereas both Loki and Freya both not introduced yet at this point, stem from Norse mythology.

Chapter Five

The mistress, I noticed, is called Mamma Mia…I wonder if that’s a plain coincidence or if that’s a deliberate tribute to Abba’s song “Mamma Mia”? It’s a fun name regardless. =)

I’m really getting into this story. It’s getting really exciting. =D

Admittedly I thought all the Gods were going to be female, given the nature of this type of story. My assumptions were crushed upon the introduction of Miach. He appears to be in a similar situation to Hestia as he works as well. Good for him.

Hestia was sweet to spend all that time kneeling for 2 days running just so Hephaistos could build a weapon for Bell. That was certainly a cool moment. I think there’s a fancy word that she used for it but for now let’s call it a prostrating position. =) It was especially sweet how she decided to enjoy the festival now that she was in the same atmosphere as Bell. It was full of cliché moments, especially when Hestia tried to feed Bell. Instead, Bell fed Hestia. Goddess or not I think being fed by a beautiful girl is always a plus point in my book. 😉

I think it’s pretty much confirmed by now that Hestia is pretty smitten with Bell. Who comes up with the name “Love Dagger” with no romantic intentions? She got jealous and suspicious of Aiz, Syr and Eina the receptionist, mostly for no reason as she read into it. I was suspicious but now my thoughts are confirmed. =)

I liked Bell’s explanation on the map of Orario… He lives in the North East part of Orario. However… when he described Orario in like a pie chart way I immediately pictured the city as a pizza with mushroom toppings divided into eight pieces…it’s incredibly silly, I know, but that just goes to show how crazy- ahem- imaginative my mind is. Haha. Now I’m picturing Bell living in the North East Pizza with thick crusts.

I didn’t expect for Freya to have eyes for Bell, or at least not so soon. I think if Freya would go after Bell, it would happen in the future books rather than in the first volume. I knew she was a mischievous type of character. She has a very fearsome yet appropriate ability. An ability which can charm anyone or any beast.

It will be interesting to see how Bell and Hestia get out of this pickle. Or pizza…

Chapter Six

So…Bell and Hestia proceed to run from this big ape. Like a true hero he protected Hestia with all his might. Naturally, for most young newbies, he gets scared of the beast. But, I feel that he’s able to fight because he’s thinking about protecting Hestia rather than protecting himself.

It was quite a teary chapter, for me. He left her so she wouldn’t get hurt. To Bell, the familiar is more than a group of adventurers and a God, Hestia is part of his family.

It was clever of Hestia to upgrade Bell’s level just in time. Likewise, the “Hestia Knife” also upgraded along with its user. It was clever how Hephaistos did this, but it did require Hestia’s hair. Credit to Hephaistos for doing a stand up job, even if Bell wasn’t a part of her familiar. I get the impression that Bell is going to get mega strong since slaying that silverback. When Hestia checks his level next time I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s borderline level two.

I can’t work out Aiz’s feelings for Bell as she is the silent and cool type. I also get the impression that she’s very awkward with socialising, choosing to let her action and kickass fighting abilities speak for her.

It’s clear that he is in her mind and she reacts whenever he’s around or is talked about. However, her relationship and feelings for Bell are not so clear. Perhaps she’s known him longer then he’s known her but we don’t know that yet? Was it really just a coincidence that she saved him from that Minotaur? I’m slightly gutted that they didn’t get their reunion as I thought they would. I’m certain that they will cross paths again as she owns him an “apology” and he owns her a “confession”. Hoho.

The ending was so lovely and heart-warming when they embraced. Hestia proclaims her love for him which I thought was very sweet. Whether Bell took it in a romantic way or a platonic way doesn’t matter as he knows that Hestia likes him. And being liked by someone you like, in all levels, is certainly a nice thing. =) Unless, of course, you have Freya stalking you… if I was Bell I’d either get out of the country or request a restraining order. 😉

Epilogue

That was a really nice epilogue. In some ways, I wonder if this should have been a prequel, since this little tale is about how Bell and Hestia first met.

Strangely, I did picture their encounter in this exact way but this was a much better encounter then the one I had pictured in my head.

Bell couldn’t get into a Familiar and Hestia couldn’t find any adventurers but they eventually found each other. It was a really nice metaphor set-up in this part. A new story begins in a room full of stories and books. I think this was clearly a love at first site in Hestia’s case.

  1. CONCLUSION

Conclusion… I really, really like this. In fact, I actually stayed up until the early hours of the morning because I was eager to see how this book ended.

It was probably a little slow at the beginning as this is the first time that I actually read a Light Novel of a franchise before reading the Manga or watching the Anime. The style and language was a little tough for me to grasp and visualise, and if I read the manga first then I probably would have grasped the concept of this story quicker. I think I got used to the writing style by Chapter 3 as I was able to visualise the scenes in my head.

I really got into it by the end of Chapter 4 and beginning of Chapter 5. I got the impression straightaway that Hestia had a deep affection for Bell. Sometimes I couldn’t really picture the scenes properly in my head. They were plenty of cliché moments which are part of the anime charm like festivals, and the girl pulling the guy along in excitement.

At this point I can’t really remember most of the terms used in this book. I think the gods like Hestia use these Hieroglyphs when they level up their children like Hestia does with Bell. However, instead of trying to remember the terms I just sort of look at the bigger picture and enjoy the story. I’ll probably be able to remember all these references and names of places when I read more of the Light Novels or when I probably re-read this book.

I really like Bell and Hestia’s relationship, and it’s even confirmed to me that she has feelings for him. Bell likes all the girls but at this point I think he sees most of them as friends. I wonder how this story will turn out. Will Bell possibly go down Issei Hyoudou’s route and have a harem or will he chose go with one girl in the end?

I would do my research on these references but I’m very determined not to be spoiled. I was often spoiled by what happened in future events of different anime, like High School DxD, Haganai, Is This a Zombie? andStrike the Blood. As this is the first time that I have read a Light Novel with no prior knowledge I’m resisting the urge to do any research, in case I am spoiled. =)

A New Yoga Place

Meditation-Yoga-pose

Peace Tidings.^^/

Ever since my Yogi instructor opened her new studio I’ve been determined to go. I didn’t know when, but I knew I wanted to go. After months of thinking I decided, in an impromptu moment, that I was going to attend her class on the upcoming Wednesday morning. I was kindly informed that the Wednesday morning class did not have many participants. That was more than an ideal class to start in. However, that did mean that I attended by myself rather than with my sister. My sister works full time.

The only place I go to by myself is the hairdressers, and that took me many years to do independently. I became familiar with the hairdressers as I’ve known one of them since my school days. I didn’t know exactly where the yoga studio was and I haven’t known the instructor for very long but my gut instinct was telling me to go alone. My Dad walked me towards the building but I entered it by myself.

I think that was the first time I did something like that without much supervision. Usually it takes me time, like with the hair salon. But here, I just entered the building and found the yoga studio just as I did when I went to the other studio with my sister. I had a rough idea what it looked like since I saw the photos on Facebook. It was a bit of a weird experience in more ways than one. It was the first time that I did Yoga without the company of my sister, but especially weird since I did it on my own. I didn’t feel as self-conscious as I normally would. I did get somewhat anxious before I left  home as that’s what happens every time I go out. But I was ok.

I tried to watch Non Non Biyori before I left as that always makes my mind relax. I couldn’t fully relax but it certainly took the sting out of it before I went out.

Ahem-

I made pleasantries when someone looked my way or someone was talking to me. I was probably a little bit stiff to tell you the truth but not so stiff that I talked like a robot. The session itself was good as well. As it was morning we did Gentle Yoga. We did balance moves so I was expecting for us to do my favourite pose, Warrior Three, but we didn’t. I was slightly gutted about that but it wasn’t that big of a deal.

I did learn something from this session… no matter how many times I do yoga poses I can never remember the names of any of them, with the exception of down facing dog and Warrior Three… I know there’s a move called the “Mermaid” but I don’t know what’s supposed to be bent and what isn’t. I will probably never memorise any of them. Haha.

I would call this day an achievement. I entered in a building, on the first go, on my own. It took me years to achieve that when I went to the Hair Salon but I did this on the first go. I’m not sure if I can get to the place by myself per se just yet but I know I can enter one by myself. So yes, all is good. =)

Applewood Farm: Half-Term Pub Quiz

602136_10152023402742171_1332782054_n

Good Tidings.^^/
I decided the week before that I was going to go to the Pub Quiz and thought no more about it. If I dwelled on it, then it would have become a big issue. And so I didn’t… One week later, Monday morning, I remembered that on that night I was quizzing… I was still going to go regardless.

I went there and became a guest participant in Team Densa. Hoho. All was well, but it only just occurred to me whilst in the pub that it was half-term. That meant that there were plenty of people about, and the whole place was rocking and lively. That’s good because it means that the atmosphere is vibrant and happy, however, it wasn’t so good for me.

I ended up getting a massive headache and felt closed in, and it wasn’t because I hit my head in the car. It did leave a ringing in my ear though…

Ahem-

In one way I can see it as unfortunate because it does feel like I can never enjoy being in a big crowd. On the other hand, it doesn’t hurt not being in big crowds as I see it more as a preference. Socialising in big crowds can be a good change of pace from time to time but I wouldn’t like it if it became a regular occurrence. I always do tend to get headaches and a massive head mush when I go out, especially if there were a lot of people around. My headache did get worse as we were sat right next to the speakers. This caused me to miss a lot of cheesy, ahem- I mean hilarious jokes made by my team. I suppose, looking at it like this, I ought to be thankful. Haha.

All in all we came 6th out of 57 teams with 68 points. I was mightily impressed I must say. I got three answers right. “Excalibur” (I’m quite knowledgeable about fantasy and myths) Stranger on the Shore (Famous album) and Baby Jane (my Mum likes all of Rod Stewart’s songs). I did know about the answer to Victoria Secret though but I convinced myself that I was going to be wrong, so I let it go. It’s quite typical, because it was the only time when I didn’t shout out a random answer. Haha.

Despite my uneasiness I did take away some enjoyment from that night…I always do.

Well, I think that’s more of the Quiz Master’s problem, not mine, so I won’t bother give that another thought. Haha. =D

Power Yoga

Rose

Happy Valentine’s Day.^^/

Does anyone have any romantic plans? I spent the morning attending the usual Saturday yoga class. I struggled to get a place for the past few weeks but I managed to get a place this week and I’m super happy about that. =)

Today I did Vin…yasa? I think that’s another term for Power Yoga. It’s very physical and more fluid then the other types of yoga classes. The moves are more or less the same but from my point of view it feels more of a workout then a regular yoga class. It’s not that I can’t do the positions it’s just that I don’t like going fast. I found that I was subconsciously trying to match the fast pace of the yoga instructor instead of taking my own time. I thought that if I lacked behind I would miss out on certain moves. So, at times I found myself getting a little frustrated instead of relaxing.

It did help though when the new yogi instructor reminded us that this is our practice and that there’s no need to go at the same pace as everyone else, just as long as we’re applying the moves safely. With this in mind I slowed down my rhythm a little bit and didn’t rush to get into the appropriate positions. I found myself feeling better after that. I also discovered that I became more energetic towards the end of the class. That usually what happens every time I jog or do yoga.

To my surprise at the end of the session I realised how little it bothered me that we had a new instructor this week. I usually don’t like to meet new people without warning. Nowadays I think I worry more about the anticipation rather than worrying about what is happening in the moment. I deal with situations better like that. Of course I’m always going to get nervous and anxious every time I go out, but I’m getting better when it comes to thinking in the moment rather than anticipate the future. =)

One of my all-time favourite performances comes in the form of “Hat-Trick”. It’s about an arrogant footballer who looks down his nose at other players and is a big womanizer. He doesn’t realise that other people make fun of him and he fails to realise his own faults, due to his high ego.

INTRODUCTION

The character Mr Hat-Trick actually came from a past college project. With many other characters he was in purgatory and wanted to ascend to heaven. He was a Football player in his past life but died in a Blimp Explosion. I bet you can all guess where I got that idea from. 😉

Ahem-

He actually started off as a romantic family man who cherishes his wife and adores his three children. Then, the tutor gave me an emotion of “sarcasm” and from that point on I developed him into someone who is very lofty and very arrogant. A little bit like Alan Partridge if you will who doesn’t realise that he is the butt of many jokes.

If I remember correctly he ends up being on the “bad” side rather than the “good” side. Haha.

UNI PROJECT IDEA

On this certain performance criteria we had to perform a community project of some sort. Around this time there were controversy involving John Terry and Wayne Bridge and the England squad was announced for the World Cup 2010. An idea immediately came to me. What if I play some football player who attends a press conference and gets asked a bunch of questions?  Random spectators from the audience can ask random questions and I could react in my character. Another idea came to me, what if I recycle a character from a past performance, I.e., Mr Hat-Trick? I love this idea so I decided to go with it.

Technically, this would probably count as a prequel to the college show as he died and resides in purgatory. Haha.

UNI-PROJECT BUILD-UP

I had quite a lot of fun on this project but at the same time I probably took it a little seriously.

As this was going to be a comedy I felt that the spectators could only appreciate it if they saw it once. I decided that it would be best if we had closed rehearsals, thinking that the comedy factor might wear thin if they had to watch it over and over in rehearsals.

I wouldn’t let anyone watch the rehearsals. In insight I believe this was unnecessary on my part. I never thought myself as unapproachable but I do think I might have taken some of the fun out of it. If I were to describe how I felt about it, I would say that I probably made it too precious.

I worked on this project with a good friend a mine, let’s call him Mr Rodders. Mr Rodders worked on the technical side. He took several photo shoots of me posing wearing a Chelsea polo shirt and in a smart suit. He also filmed me running around in the park and playing football. I had to imagine that I was playing against the opposition. That was fun. I even got on the bus with him in an impromptu visit to the park. That was good experience for me as I don’t handle impromptu decisions well.

I had a few photoshoots with my fiancée, Mrs Hat-Trick, Jaclyn Delacroix. That was good experience for me too as it’s rare that I have to act lovey-dovey and embrace a lot. Hugs are not my thing so I was asking a lot of myself here.

One of the funniest moments during the build-up would was what I refer to as “the pink shirt moment”. The Character, Pippa, wore a pink shirt with a picture of my face on it and a huge “I” and a heart above my face. I.e., I love Hat-Trick. With assistance from Mum I managed to iron the image on. It turned out that the top was absolutely massive on the actor, and it actually went below her knees! You guessed it, I bought a size far too big. You see, in my head it was “A PINK SHIRT! I MUST GET THAT BEFORE IT SELLS OUT!” Nothing else really went through my mind except the colour “pink”. Haha.

I felt that overall, despite being out of my comfort zone a little, I was a good leader and director. Usually I’m not very good at giving orders and when I’m in that position I’m hesitant and unsure. However, if I’m comfortable with the project, I know what I’m doing and I’m good at communicating.

I like to think I managed to accommodate the actors to their needs and I was able to process 5 questions at once… this often happened back when I was at school so it was a useful habit to have. =) The most important thing is that I never panicked and I never once took out my slight nerves on the actors and Mr Rodders. I’ve never been one to take out my frustration on others or humiliate them and I certainly wasn’t going to start then.

Leadership skills are not my strongest asset but I did myself proud. =)

UNI-PROJECT PLAY

The show started with me walking towards the main tech building with a young lady on my arm. The audience were in the foyer and my agent, Chip, played by Mr Rodders, phoned me and asked me where I was. On cue, when I was close enough, he walked outside and made a fuss out of my appearance. Then, he went back in and gathered the audience back in the facility where the “press conference” would take place.

My actual family was in attendance as was a good friend of mine. When I’m playing serious parts I don’t want my family to see me, but when I’m playing light-hearted parts, I like my family in attendance.

Usually, I take my roles seriously and it takes me little time to learn my lines. However, I feel that I’m only natural when I play the parts that I’m comfortable with, I.e., Hat-Trick. When I play parts seriously, I make little mistakes. When I play parts with good fun and they bring the best out of me, I’m prone to many mistakes. And that’s what happened in the actual play… I made plenty of mistakes but for the first time, I didn’t panic. I didn’t get annoyed either. I think it’s because I was calling all the shots and felt that I could get away with a “mistake or two”. ^^/

I loved the performance. I really let go and acted out Mr Hat-Trick. I was a bit of a womanizer and had plenty of banter with some of the actors in the audience. I even cursed a couple of times which I won’t repeat on here. 😉

One of my favourite pieces of dialogue is:

Hat-Trick: Besides, he’s s***

Mr H: Your s***

Hat-Trick: He’s the s****** of the s***

Mr: No, you are S***! You look like s***! You smell like s***! You are S***!

Hat-Trick: No, no, no, mate… I am THE S***. He’s just… S***!

The performance was concluded when Chip embraced me, groped my bum and pushed me out of the “conference” room…. The audience literally laughed their rockers off when that happened. I must admit, I thought it was funny too. I didn’t really know how I didn’t laugh myself.

UNI-PROJECT CONCLUSION

I was very natural. I was familiar with the football world and the sort of thing footballers may get up to. It was a comedy as well, so I could really let go and allow Hat-Trick to take over me for a little while.

My marks didn’t go as high as I could have got since I completely forgot what the original criteria assignment was about. That was to get the “audience” involved and since the actors I “hired” were “planted” it became a regular play rather than an interactive theatre. I didn’t mind this though because I was really proud of what I’ve accomplished and it’s all thanks to the help of Mr Rodders and everyone else who got involved to make it a good play. =)

I should mention as well that I did create a Facebook Fanpage for Hat-Trick in order to advertise the show. Looking at this page made me remember how much I enjoyed performing this piece. I’m even laughing right now as I recall some of the funny moments. =)

However, it seems that since then, a few people genuinely believed that I was an actual Chelsea player. In the near future, I’m going to cancel this account to prevent any more confusion. For now though I’m going to share this link so you all can check it out, if you like. =)
