Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Nine Thoughts

Erina Endcard

I really do like Hinako, she’s very cute. Even though she has a fearsome reputation she acts very relaxed and sweet. I do think her moral dropped after Soma took away her Kaki-no-Tane. It was all for a good cause though as he served her that very same tea snack as part of a dish. I can’t describe it but he sort of coated the fish with the Kaki-no-Tane chips. I also really like the fact how Hinako is voiced by Mamiko Noto. I just know when a character is being voiced by Mamiko as she has that distinctive voice about her. I get drawn into her voice and characters every time. =)

Hinako summed up Soma perfectly in that he’s very creative despite time running against him. She looked pretty as a mermaid but I did crack up laughing when the man behind her had a meat-type head. I’m not really sure how else to describe it except that I thought it was funny. XD

I unexpectedly started to like Takumi in this episode. I pictured him to be an arrogant lad but I think he’s probably more awkward then arrogant. It was especially funny when he made that dramatic speech about next time he sees Soma it will be in a Shokugeki battle… only to find out that they would sit next to each other on the bus!  I guess all the long he just needed a rival and a friend who he can relate with. One thing for sure, Takumi and Soma will definitely respect each other from now on.

It looks like everyone in the Polar Star gang managed to survive by one day… for now. Now all the students have to serve 50 servings each to the muscular athletes. I felt sorry for Yuuki as she was looking forward to relax but now she can’t. The way she mellowed in despair was pretty funny to watch. It does seem rather unfair on all the students that they have to prepare all those dishes straightaway when they came back from a stern test. It’s amazing how quickly Soma prepared those 50 dishes. I hope Ikumi and Megumi and the rest of the Polar Star Gang manage to make those 50 dishes just in time.

Soma and Erina humming to the ending song was pretty fun to watch. Soma’s humming and dancing was really funny watch whilst Erina’s humming was relaxing to watch. I didn’t think they would bump into each other any time soon. I wonder what’s going to happen next. I’d imagine Erina is just going to give Soma a lot of verbal abuse. Haha.

FA Cup Trophy

It’s the FA Cup Final today and I’m really looking forward to it. As I understand it if Villa win the cup, they play in the Europa League next season, if Arsenal win, Southampton play in the Europa League next season.

Either way I do feel sorry for the English teams who play in the Europa League as it must be gruelling for them to play on a Thursday and a Sunday. Look what happened to Everton. They finished at the bottom half of the table. I get the feeling that the same could happen with Southampton. They had a fantastic season last season but if they play in the Europa League next season then I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t do as well as they did this season. Having said all that, they played above expectations this season and just ran out of steam near the end. I’m very pleased for them. =)

Anyway- my FA Cup prediction.

It’s going to be Arsenal 3-1 Aston Villa. I think Arsenal will just nudge Villa out but I don’t think they’ll keep a clean sheet. Let the fun times roll. =)

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Eight Thoughts

Food Wars Shokugeki no Soma

Every time I see Soma’s smug and confident face I literally crack up.

To get into Totsuki Culinary Academy you have to be pretty skilled and pass the introduction test. However, even though the passing rate is like 1% or 10% there are still quite a lot of students attending, especially in the first year. Why so many? It turns out that the real test begins on this camp trip. More students will no doubt be expelled and sent home.

I was expecting to see Soma’s Dad there as he is probably one of the best chefs in the world. But, the chefs at that camp have to be alumni of that school and Jouichirou did not necessarily go to that school. I suspect he did though but it will probably be revealed later.

The Takumi twins and Erina appear to have passed the test no problem so it’s now up to Soma and Megumi to make sure that they pass the test. Out of the Polar Star Gang I hope Ryouko and Yuuki pass their tests as I’m rather fond of them. I wouldn’t mind if Shun passes too. As for Zenji and Shouji… I wouldn’t lose sleep if they failed. Haha.

I knew that Takumi was going to be arrogant and I was really pleased when he was brought down to size by Hinako, the adorable chef teacher. It was especially funny when Soma was taking the mickey out of him. Even Takumi’s twin brother, Isami, thought that Takumi made a fool out of himself. XD

Megumi, Ryouko and Yuuki Eyecatch

I’m really looking forward to seeing what sort of dish Soma and Megumi come up with. I also hope we get more glimpses of Ikumi and we see more of Hinako, I think she really is cute. It was especially cute when she casually started to eat a packet of crisps on a side table. I don’t think many chefs would be that laid back.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Seven Thoughts

Food Wars Shokugeki no Soma

Those don dishes look delicious. I really do wonder if these recipes and dishes actually exist in real life. I most certainly would love to try them out for myself if they really did.

Anyway, I’m glad Soma won in the end. I actually half-expected the battle between him and Ikumi to end in a draw. It’s a bonus that Soma won because it wiped the smirk from Erina’s face. I noticed something as well. Even though Soma is very confident in his abilities he’s actually very humble when he battles his opponents. I would have thought that he would gloat about his victory but he didn’t, in fact, he was actually very nice towards Ikumi and gave her an affectionate nickname.

I partly started to dislike Ikumi when I first saw her as I knew that she was somehow associated with Erina. I figured she’d be just as arrogant as she is. She did look down on Yuki because his ingredients were “cheap.” However, my opinion changed of her when she tasted Soma’s dish.

Her Father was horrible to her when he said that he wanted Ikumi, his daughter, to be strong and not be ladylike. He’s quite a jerk if you ask me. This was probably a traumatic experience that stemmed from her childhood and made her put on this act all this time. She put on this front of being tough and confident but really she was desperate to be herself. To me, so far, she has more redeeming features than Erina does and Soma has earned her respect, perhaps even more than that…

That bit at the end was hilarious. I actually thought that Soma was going to join the Don Research Society, but like Ikumi, I discovered that this was far from the truth. I actually feel really sorry for Ikumi as she was now required to join some club due to the conditions of the battle. Not only this but Soma, who laid down the conditions and the person who she wanted to see the most, ended up not joining… I’m sure she’ll get her chance to speak with him again though. I have no doubt about that. =)

Kanichi was especially funny when he kept on trying to pawn off his Don title to Soma and Ikumi. Honestly, if he has no interest in being the Don of his club than he might has well allowed Erina to use her authority to shut his club down. Haha. Perhaps he wants to be just a member and not have responsibility of a Don.

I liked how Soma used handmade picked plum paste and mixed it into the rice. Soma has shown in this episode as he has done in the previous episodes that the price tag doesn’t show its true value in the product. It’s how you bring out the best of the product with your skills, knowledge and creativity when cooking. I wonder if that paste was inspired by Megumi. I remember that Soma said that Megumi gave him a good idea for a recipe. I’m pretty confident to say that it’s probably that. =)

Urara is also funny. She pretends to act all cute and ladylike but really she’s a completely different person on the inside. Her eye catch is just as amusing.

Judging by what I see in the preview it looks like that Soma’s next encounter involves an arrogant looking blonde dude with a chef’s hat. I hope Soma cuts him down to size, but not literally…

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Six Thoughts

Food Wars Shokugeki no Soma

Good grief. I knew that the new mean girl was going to have a face-off with someone from the Polar Star Dormitory but I never thought she would be facing Soma so soon. It was rather nice of Soma to prevent the closure of the Don R’s club, or at least delay the inevitable. Soma really is brave to challenge the new girl by competing against her at her own game, meat. Well, if you look at it another way, brave might not be the appropriate word. Haha.

Ikumi is quite a beauty and I really like her appearance style. What I especially like about her though is her voice. It’s like she growls softly and sensually in a hypnotic way. Through research I discovered that her voice actor, Shizuka Ishigami, also voices Syr Flover from DanMachi. Syr has a soft and sweet voice and she sounds nothing like Ikumi at all but they both delight my ears. =)

Anyway, I’m somewhat nervous for Soma. I really didn’t think they’d go against each other soon. Will this battle last a couple of episodes or will it just be one episode? It looks like Megumi is going to help out with Soma and Kanichi. In some ways Megumi does remind me of Stephanie Dola from No Game No Life. Like Stephanie, Megumi is forced to try things, participate in things and is on the end of insults.

On this occasion Soma dragged Megumi along to this Don R’s club and she actually inspired him to come up with a dish. Like Stephanie Dola, even if Megumi appears to be “useless” she has actually played an important part and inspired Soma. Soma, in turn, actually inspired Megumi to add a bit of honey into her own rice recipe for breakfast. Good for her! She really is a wife in the making. If I was Soma I would slap a ring around that but he’s too passionate about food to even care about romance… for now. I think Megumi is going to play a huge part in the upcoming battle, perhaps she’ll get over her stage fright with the help of Soma. =)

I don’t really like how Erina is crushing all the clubs for her own gain, even if she is a pretty face. She does make me laugh a lot so I don’t dislike her completely. Kanichi is pretty funny how he kept on losing confidence and how his big hair started to grow back when his confidence started to come back. Haha. I think he secretly enjoyed being backed up against the wall by Ikumi.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Three Thoughts

Food Wars Shokugeki no Soma

I really do like Megumi. She is very sweet girl who lacks a lot of confidence and self-esteem. She went to the Tootsuki Culinary Academy to make her family proud only to end up failing upon her first exam. Haha. Her shocked expressions are cute and endearing. I’m just really pleased that she was able to pass Roland Chapelle’s test along with Soma.

I’m impressed with how quickly Soma adapts to the situation. Some of the current students appear to be out to get him. All except for Megumi, who until now, has simply just been trying to avoid him rather than degrade him. However, Soma didn’t feel sorry for himself he just got on with it. It turns out that his additional recipe, the honey, made that beef extra delicious. Megumi’s extravagant visualisation was quite… funny. I kind of knew at that point that she was going to be covered in honey. I didn’t anticipate that there were going to be little Somas, disguised as bees, pouring honey on her. Haha.

Those mean students eventually got their come-uppance. I’m really pleased about that. It makes Soma and Megumi’s victory that much sweeter. The best part of all is that Soma didn’t retaliate or care about the other students who tried to mess with his cooking. All he cared about was his own dish and working together with Megumi. I think that’s a very good attitude to have.

Soma is still showing his crazy quirks by force feeding Megumi squids glazed in honey… it reminds me of that line General Melchett spoke in the last episode of Blackadder Goes Forth.[1] Haha. Poor, poor Megumi… mind you, it might be naïve of me to feel sorry for her. She probably secretly liked it, just like Mayumi did when Soma force fed her that weird girl. Haha.

I think Erina is being somewhat in denial. I think she secretly likes Soma’s cooking but her pride is preventing her from being true to her own feelings. Her resentment towards Soma is probably going to grow deeper for the next couple of episodes. The sheer name of him makes her go bananas, and in a most humorous way. Haha. Soma doesn’t appear to care about being disliked or resented. Either that or he’s too much of a scatterbrain to even notice. Haha.

I don’t think Soma will take Erina’s spot as the number one chef at the academy just yet. He still has a long way to go and he probably needs to overcome many odds before that happens.

I wonder what Erina’s grandfather’s relationship is with Soma. Do they have a link that we don’t know about yet? It seems that he is the only one who is behind Soma being at this academy. I think that’s really cool as he clearly doesn’t care about Soma’s status in life. Being lowbrow or highbrow is completely irrelevant as long as the student can cook delicious food, and Soma has proven that. Soma’s dad is quite famous so perhaps Erina’s granddad knows him personally? Thus, that is why he is lenient with Soma and giving him a chance when everyone else isn’t.

I felt that this episode ended much too fast… that’s how much I enjoyed this episode. =)

I started watching Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches episode one not so long ago. I think its ok so far and there were some humorous moments in it and I will probably watch more. I don’t have any particular enthusiasm to write a separate blog about episode one so I just thought I’d mention it here. =)

Monster Musume Volume 6 came at my house last night. I’ve not had the chance to read any of it yet as I’ve had a busy day watching The Premier League games and the FA Cup Semi-Final between Arsenal and Reading. I feel sorry for Federeci for letting in the goal like that. He looked completely devastated and hopefully it won’t become a stigma in years to come.

I knew Arsenal would beat Reading and reach the final, but who will join them? Will it be Liverpool or Aston Villa? I think Villa are going to give it a real good goal but will come up short. I think the score will be 2-1 to Liverpool.

Thanks for Reading. =)

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode Two Thoughts

Food Wars Shokugeki no Soma

I could not stop laughing.

Erina either has a very big imagination or she is just plain crazy. Who else would imagine sitting in a hot spring with a silverback? But, apparently that’s what she envisaged as she was eating something “disgusting.” Haha!

It did look like she was having a pleasant experience when she was eating Soma’s rice with special seasoning. She envisaged angels floating down, tickling her bare skin as her palate was literally going through a heavenly experience. These angels had faces of Soma. Really, I think she wanted to say that Soma’s food was “delicious” but she said that it was “disgusting” as her pride was hurt. I’m not sure what hurt her pride the most. Was it that a “common” person was able to dish up something delicious or did she feel that Soma was looking down on her? Either way, he ended up failing… poor Soma. Well, I say poor Soma but I could not stop laughing. XD

Erina’s reaction upon hearing what Soma was cooking was priceless. Soma’s lack of fear towards Erina was very admirable. It’s a good job that he didn’t care for her strong reputation as “God’s Tongue.” The flashback when she was being breast-fed by her Mum when she was a baby had me laughing hard the most. I’ve never known a baby to critique breast-feeding before… hopefully this will be the last time! Haha!

I did feel a little bit sorry for Soma as the other examinee students were looking down on him, seeing him as an outcast. Erina even saw him out of place to some extent as he is not part of the high-class industry. However, Soma came out on top as everyone else fled the venue out of fear for Erina’s reputation. If I was Soma, I would be pretty darn smug by now.

It looks like the elderly gent at the end took a bit of Soma’s food and liked it. Even if Erina has failed him, it looks like he is going to over-ride her decision. A wise choice, I must say, as Erina was not really being impartial. =)

I’m anticipating a love and hate relationship between Soma and Erina, mostly on Erina’s part. Perhaps she is going to be a tsundere and loves Soma’s food but won’t be honest about it. It looks like Soma’s dad is really going places and is now a top chef in a restaurant based in New York. I wonder where Soma’s mum is. Given Soma’s Dad’s speech, I do wonder if she’s no longer around.

Last night was a good night for playing Mario. We played Mario 3D World, Mario Kart and Mario Party 10. I got killed and came last plenty of times but I did manage to win once, so it’s all good. =D

Now, it’s time for Manchester United vs Manchester City. I wonder who’s going to win. I personally think Man Utd have the advantage as City are out of form at this moment in time.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma Episode One Thoughts

Food Wars Shokugeki no Soma

I honestly didn’t know what to expect from Food Wars, but I certainly wasn’t prepared for what I did see in the first episode. Haha.

Soma likes to experiment with his food for his family’s restaurant. Sometimes his experiments pay off but sometimes they’re just plain awful, like the squid tentacles covered in peanut butter. Haha. I like him already. When it comes to experimenting with food and cuisine, I can relate. I used to blend in plenty of different fruit and food together in the food blender to create something different. Me and my brother even came up with our own recipe, Triple Decker Crisp Sandwich. Haha. Basically, you get three layers of bread, spread margarine on each piece, and fit as many crisps as you can in them. On Mother’s Day, I even baked a Victoria Sponge cake and added blue food colouring and the cake came out a tinge of blue. =D I was really proud that it came out just right. =)

Ahem- back to the show.

Mayumi reacted very negatively when she was fed the squid tentacles smothered in peanut butter. I wasn’t expecting a kinky visualisation of her being “attacked” by tentacles. I kind of clocked on from then that whenever the girls eat their food they’re going to describe the taste in very erotic and over the top ways. Haha. We found out right at the end that she did enjoy it somewhat, even if it was not edible. I suspect straight away that she has feelings for Souma, or at least has a soft spot for him. Either way, she’s going to support him. =)

I also found out that Mayumi’s voice actor also voices Sento Isuzu from Amagi Brilliant Park. =D I would never have guessed. I also come to learn that she voices a certain character from the new anime of this season, High School DxD Born. =)

That meat looking dish that Soma did for the attractive Yaeko does look tasty and it’s not surprising when she gave in to temptation. When she first appeared in the show I actually thought she was trying to seduce Souma since she was paying him attention and not the Dad. I wonder why she ignored the Dad. Surely she would try to negotiate with the owner of the restaurant, I.E. the Dad, rather than Soma.

Whatever tricks she tried it didn’t work. I admire Soma for keeping his cool and act together. Not many young people would be able to compose themselves or think rationally in that type of situation. It’s not often you see a fifteen year old coming out on top against four grown adults. I did feel sorry for him at the end. All that hard work of trying to keep the shop from running out of business and his Dad tells him that he’s closing up the shop… It was pretty funny to watch. Haha.
I’m pleased that he was sent to the top cuisine school in the whole of Japan, and it looks like there are a few who have already failed to get in. Oh dear. I have good confidence that Souma will do himself justice, so I’m not worried.

I did laugh and cringe a couple of times whenever I saw the erotic visualisations of the eaters enjoying or not enjoying their food. I think the funniest visualisation came right at the end when Erina eat her food. I genuinely thought she was underneath a waterfall and I laughed really, really hard when a jukebox out of nowhere hit her head. I was like ‘where did that come from?’ It turns out that this is exactly what she was imagining when she was eating her food. XD

In some ways, this show does remind me of the Senran Kagura: Bon Appetit game. I have noticed in a lot of anime, when someone eats their food they tend to over-describe the taste in cute or funny ways. I think I’m going to really enjoy Food Wars. I’m looking forward to episode two. =)
