My Website Goes Live

Ryan Speakman Website

Summer Tidings everyone.^^/

With encouragement from my family I have decided to open up a website that’s all about me. I feel like, and my friends and family agree, that I have more to offer than writing and blogging. On my site I talk about my hobbies and passion for writing, I show my photography and art and of course my blog.

As I have my very own website now I have decided to concentrate my blogging posts about autism, anime and my thoughts in general over there instead of here on the WordPress site.

I have always thought about having my very own website but I never really had the confidence to get my face out there, especially on the internet… until now. Over the years, my confidence has grown. Not only am I opening up about my autism I actually talk about my daily experiences in social situations and I’m showing my fan art across the net. Showing my art has especially been a concern of mine since I was younger. Nowadays those worries are behind me.

WordPress was the platform for me to start blogging and to me there’s no better way to start. I found that my confidence soured and I felt like my writing has improved every single time I write up a new post.

If you like to check out my new website, here is the link.

Thank you to everyone who has been taking an interest in my blogs so far. I enjoy what I’m writing but it’s a bonus knowing that some you enjoy reading them. It makes my blogging experience all the more enjoyable.

Thanks for Reading. =)

Good Tidings.^^/

On a spur of the moment I decided to open a Tumblr account.

Usually when I take action I have to think things over and make sure that I’m happy with what I’m doing. However, I decided that it would be a nice idea to become part of the Tumblr world as they seem to offer a different kind of vibe from WordPress. Admittedly, I was a little nervous at first because I usually never do anything bold without thinking it over. However, I think in the long run this was a good decision.

By what I’ve browsed so far it seems that users prefer to share pictures and animated GIFS more than posting blog posts. There are plenty of pictures I checked out, like characters from my favourite manga and Thomas the Tank Engine. =) I set it up so that whatever I post on my blogging site it will automatically post up on Tumblr.

Here is the link to my Tumblr account. I go by the same username:

My First Year Blog Anniversary

Party Popper

Blog Tidings.^^/

It seems rather strange that I have been blogging for one full year now and this was met by many adventures that I did during that period. =) I’m not sure how it started really. I believe I was just rambling on with my family when it came up in passing that I should blog about my experiences with Autism. I learned over the years that writing things down can release my unwanted tension and it’s another form of me expressing myself. =)

After careful consideration, I registered on WordPress and my blogging journey started…

I could talk about my year as a whole, but instead, I’ll just summarise and link to the blogs that I think are significant.^^/

  1. Introduction

This is my introduction which I wrote one year ago. =)

  1. WWE Raw 2013

I went to WWE Raw with my circle friends. I used to be a big fan of WWE but this was the first time that I attended an actual wrestling show. It was daunting but it wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. Plus, my favourite wrestlers were in attendance.

  1. Segway

This was good experience and an instant highlight of the year. I arranged a birthday treat for my brother. This was the first time that I had actually arranged anything. I was also venturing into the unknown here. It was a little distance away but we both had a really good time and I would do Segway again without hesitation.

  1. Pub-Quizzing

On some occasions I would go to the Pub Quiz either as a night out or to celebrate a special occasion. I would often have to have a long think about whether I want to go out or not. Last month though, I went to the pub quiz for Cheese’s (the friend, not the dairy product) birthday celebration. Instead of needing to think I just decided to deal with my emotions when the time arrived.

  1. WWE Royal Rumble

In early 2014 I stayed at my brother’s until the early hours watching WWE Royal Rumble. For some televised wrestling events I would often stay over. Usually after the event I spend the rest of my night sitting in a chair reading as I don’t feel comfortable sleeping in someone else’s house.

  1. Completing a Writing Course

This was certainly a joyous occasion and I celebrated it with a pint of J2O. 😉 I learned a lot about writing and how to approach a publisher. Nothing has been happening for me and my books just yet but I believe I’m steering myself in the right direction. =)

  1. Positivity and Autism

Naturally, coping with Autism can be tough. I tend to over-think and read into situations that are not there.

  1. Visiting College

Visiting my college again was quite a challenge. I was invited back to college a few times to watch performances and to catch up with people but I declined those offers. I was out of routine and had become unfamiliar with everything.

However, this year, I decided to pluck up my own courage and visited. I thought long and hard about this invitation but in the last minute I decided to say “yes.”

  1. The Wedding Blogs

I didn’t have much to blog about in July except for one…my sister’s wedding. That was a very significant moment and I achieved a lot personally on that day.

  1. Yoga

My outlook on myself and confidence is highly due to my regular practice in Yoga.

  1. Film with a Friend

I went to watch the Transformers film with a friend… this was definitely a significant moment as this was the first time that I’ve been out with someone without a family member being present. The following day I went to the cinema with my Dad, and I took the initiative as he is less familiar with the procedure then I am.

  1. Impromptu Outing

Going to an impromptu trip to a train station was an interesting challenge.

  1. November Happenings

November was very busy month and was perhaps the most challenging.

I designed a Halloween costume dressed as the Shockmaster for my Brother’s Halloween party. The day after that I went to London to watch Distant Worlds: music from Final Fantasy orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. As I travelled to London it was necessary for me to stay in a hotel, the first time that I ever slept in a bed that wasn’t my own… If that wasn’t challenging enough, I then travelled to Liverpool to watch WWE Raw.

BLOGGING

I believe I still have a lot to learn where blogging is concerned. What I have learnt though is that at times I probably forced myself to blog about stuff if I felt that I should blog about it. I like to think that in one year I developed my own style of writing and blogging. I consider myself always upbeat and looking on the happy side of life.

What I learnt is that I need to enjoy what I’m writing and I would often remind myself that all these blogs are from my own point of view. I tend to get the best out of myself if I enjoy writing, especially when reviewing film and manga. It can be hard at times since I find it difficult to summarise but thankfully I have my editor (aka Mum) to help me out. 😉

I find as well that if you don’t force yourself to blog you will have more things to talk about.

I feel a lot better when I’m blogging as it’s a good way to express myself. However, it came to light at times that viewers from all over the world are actually reading what I have to say. I’m also aware that some of my blogs have put smiles on the faces of my friends.

Making people happy is what motivates me to continue writing and blogging. Being happy is important, and if I’m making someone happy then I intend to keep up with that flow! =)

Two Thumbs-Up

I summarised my whole year to the best of my abilities. How did I do? Did I waffle too much? Haha. Well, I had to figure out how I was going to write this blog. In all honesty, it wasn’t a tough as I anticipated. All I had to do was sum up what I did and share my adventures from last November to now. =)

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. I can’t wait to see what my future adventures will involve next.

See you next time.^^/

Witchcraft Works Volume One Review

Witch Craft Works Volume One Cover

It’s easy for me to get carried away with this review since I’ve actually seen the anime and have bought the official soundtrack. However, I will restrain myself and focus primarily on this book… promise! =)

  1. SYNOPSIS

Honoka Takamiya is a student of Tougetsu Academy who is docile, has no special talents and is severely anti-social. However, since that day, a new world opened up to him that he never knew existed. Since then his body had become a target and it is up to Akaya, the school’s idol, to protect his life at all costs. If you dare cross her path, you better prepare yourself to be burned to cinders!

WARNING: I MAY GIVE SPOILERS AWAY

For some reason I have quite affection towards girls who are emotionless and I believe they’re affectionately known as Kuudere.[3] XD I think they’re cute because they show their affection through their actions rather than through facial expressions. There’s always a charming mystery about those types of girls too and Ayaka is no different. Her personality blends well with her looks and her kickass fire abilities. It’s a nice touch that she’s invincible. Well, I’m just assuming that she’s invincible at this point as she is clearly hard to kill. Witch or not no one should be able to survive those spike stabs and come out unscathed.

But, I then question… how did she get those bite marks? Honoka was bitten in the neck but somehow she was able to transfer Honoka’s own injuries to herself… Perhaps she did it through magic (since she’s a witch and all) or, maybe, they have a connection that hasn’t been revealed yet? Why is she assigned to protect Honoka and his “white stuff”? Could he be a witch? At this point I can’t see how that can be possible, it seems as though it’s just the ladies that have the power. In theory, if Honoka does have powers you would think that he would be a wizard.

I immediately like Honoka and Ayaka’s contrast in their relationship. I feel like somehow Honoka is accustomed to the company of females. There’s no evidence in this matter, it’s just my own hunch. He’s becoming quickly familiar with Ayaka, even if he is a little bewildered by her actions. Haha. I especially like the contrasting relationship on how the girl (Ayaka) is protecting the boy (Honoka). I also like it how Ayaka literally dwarfs Honoka. I do like the look of small guys and tall girls, it’s oddly fascinating. Haha. However, despite this contrasting relationship, this doesn’t deter Ayaka’s femininity. In fact, on the odd occasion she would emit a field of flowers. =)

What is this “white stuff” that Honoka has? Is it a powerful tool? Is it powerful magic? The tower witches are after it, so it must be some sort of powerful magic. I don’t feel too worried for Honoka though, by what I’ve seen all the bad witches seem to be completely useless. It goes to the point where I can’t take them seriously. XD Are the tower witches weak or is Ayaka too strong? It’s probably a mixture of both.

I actually don’t see Tanpopo and her gang as baddies, but more like tools. I think they’re underlines of some villain mastermind and they don’t necessarily mean to be bad. I just see them too meek and funny to consider them as villains. I see them as wannabe baddies, like Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons.

I find this to be a very intriguing story so far. It has magic, tall girls and a lot of humour. So far the humour is coming from all the witches, mostly Tanpopo and Ayaka. In some ways it’s hard to tell when Ayaka is joking or being serious because she is incapable of showing emotion through her face. There are occasional glares and twitches from her eyes though, as illustrated when Touko greeted her warmly. Ayaka requited the greeting with a cold response. Haha. I wonder why Ayaka was hostile towards her.

Honoka is a nice dude to the point where he is a borderline pacifist. He doesn’t defend himself when he gets beaten up and won’t attack either. He seems to be a bit too dependent on Ayaka at this point. I get the impression that he’s used to getting rough ends of treatment, both verbally and physically. I do think that with the right tutelage, as he became Ayaka’s apprentice, he will learn to defend himself.^^/

I do like this style of art. It is somewhat similar to my own in the respect of body proportion. I think it’s very good to compare other art styles as long as you don’t take yourself too seriously. I like the colour themes and how he shades background characters. Looking at art makes me wonder if perhaps I’m too critical of my own work. I will always strive to improve my own illustration style. =)

  1. BONUS

We have a lot of very interesting facts which includes a certain mention of a girl. The author revealed that he was going to call the girl Pikachu but didn’t since that would cause a lot of trouble. Haha.

What I found most interesting was Honoka. It appears that he was originally supposed to be a girl and that he and Ayaka were going to have a Yuri[4] relationship. It appears that now the author has deemed it fit to change Honoka’s gender to a boy. It actually does make sense to me as due to his personality and quirks his feminine side was more prominent then his masculine side. Plus, Ayaka referred to him as her “princess” even though he’s a dude. Haha. It’s kind of sweet in a way. That doesn’t make him any less of a boy though. =)

  1. CONCLUSION

I really like the unique relationship and the role reversal between Ayaka and Honoka. I think it’s a sweet yet slightly complicated relationship. I say relationship but nothing romantic has blossomed between them… yet. 😉 The illustrations are eye-catching (no pun intended) and it makes me want to read more. Why is Ayaka so mysterious? Why are the tower witches after Honoka’s “white stuff”? I’m probing many personal questions that I look forward to being answered in the future volumes to come.

I’m looking outside of my window now and, even though the sun is up it’s actually raining pretty hard… I enjoy contrasting weathers like this. =)

What do you think of the header? I somehow had the urge to do it. If I gave it some more time then I could have made it better. But, I think it’s as good as it is and I’m very pleased with it. =)

[1] The target audience of this manga is towards an older gentleman with the age range from 18 to 30.

[2] Every day mundane life.

[3] Kuuderes are cold and emotionless, but they slowly soften up to their love interest. Ayaka is more on the emotionless side and is not really cold. She is hostile to her enemies though.

High School DxD Volume Two Review

High School DxD Vol 2

Konbanwa.^^/

I am thrilled to announce that I have recently uploaded my 50th blog post. So far, I have been enjoying it a bunch. =)
It came to my attention that I don’t really review or scrutinise manga like a professional. I also realise that some readers will not appreciate being spoiled during review. I understand and respect those points.

However, I talk about manga based on my enjoyment through my casual rambling. You will notice that I go off-topic in many of my reviews, like this one. =) The whole purpose of me blogging is a chance for me to express my feelings and how I handle social situations and cope with Autism. I figured that reviewing manga would give me another reason to blog and express myself, rather than just talk about Autism. I actually have read a few manga but so far I’ve chosen to review the ones that I’m really, really enjoying.^^/

I may not be the most professional reviewer but I’m still going to keep reviewing casually as doing it this way makes me happy. =D

  1. REVIEW

Issei Hyoudou, once human pre Volume One, is now the servant of the voluptuous devil, Rias Gremory. Issei has entered into a forbidden friendship with the nun of the church, the pacifist sister, Asia Argento.

Issei’s devil master, Rias, prohibits Issei from interacting with Asia, let alone befriending her. Doing so would create a striving commotion between the Devils, Fallen Angels and the church. As you can imagine, when Issei comes into contact with Asia and rushes to her aid, he’s practically asking for trouble. How will he handle Heaven’s malevolent schemes?

I enjoyed Volume Two as much as the previous volume, in more ways than one. Since this is classed as an ecchi manga and it’s targeted towards a mature audience, it’s easy to assume that it’s just full of unnecessary cheeky moments… you would be surprised that this isn’t necessarily so. It has much more to offer then beautiful ladies that expose their sensual skin and figures. I effectively refer this as a guilty pleasure bonus. 😉

With how Issei is treating Asia as a friend it does make me wonder if their relationship is going to turn into something more serious. It even implies at the back of the book that a forbidden romance could transpire between the two. Their first encounter was very nice, and their friendship certainly has blossomed in this volume. Issei may be perverted, but he’s not a jerk about it. He treats Asia with respect, and likewise, Asia treats him like a precious friend. I definitely like Asia; I tend to connect strongly with innocent and kind girls like her. I’m not that keen on aggressive girls as I don’t necessarily find them funny and it will take me a while to accept them for who they are. However, I have no such worries with innocent and polite girls like Asia as I find them to be endearing.

This is when I got concerned about Rias… She instantly grew on me when she made her debut in the first book, she is simply gorgeous. So, because she is adamant about Issei abandoning his friendship with Asia, I was concerned that she was going to dislike her. Granted, her reasons for being concerned and acting like a typical big sister are very well justified. But, I was really rooting for Asia to enter into a friendship with Issei. At that point I did suspect that a love triangle could happen. However, luckily, everything worked out in the end and my worries about disliking Rias were squashed. In fact, the opposite happened. Rias eventually accepts Asia and welcomed her into the world of the devils…

Naturally, I was most upset when Asia died after that, ahem- malicious lady killed her. The villains in this story are very well portrayed. I always think that at least the most villainous of characters will have some redeeming features, like perhaps baddies of this series…NOPE. I hate them all, at least, in this manga. XD I really like girls like Asia and I certainly like Issei, so to see those getting beaten down or besmirched did leave a bad taste in my mouth. I was upset when Asia was abandoned but nearly cried when she died… I then sighed and puffed my cheeks into a wide smile. Asia was brought back to life by Rias and made her, her bishop. I’m very happy indeed. =D

Let’s talk about Raynare, one of the many villains… I mention about redeeming features. She implied that now that she obtained Asia’s sacred gear, which involves healing abilities, she will no longer be laughed at. It makes me wonder if something horrible made her what she is today. Perhaps something drove her mad into becoming a fallen angel? Perhaps I should feel sorry for her? Perhaps I should look at it from her point of view? Perhaps her reason for killing Issei and Asia can be justified? …NAH! I still dislike her. XD I must say though, I did feel for her to some degree when Rias obliterated her. She deserved by all means but isn’t this one of those where two wrongs don’t make a right? I wouldn’t have killed her per se, but, I’m glad Rias did. =)

There are plenty of situations that can be taken as highlights, such as Issei befriending Asia, Asia, the beautiful ladies, but for me the main highlight is the battle.

The on-going battles and action were awesome; it also made me forget about the fact that this is classed as an ecchi manga. The ladies don’t expose their skin just for the sake of it, but when they do, it’s appropriate for the situation.

During the battle the roles of the fighters have been explained. Issei was the perfect protagonist that takes centre stage. His two back-ups, Kiba and Koneko, were the ideal support team. They showed off their skills to a big crowd of villains whilst Issei took on the big dog. To me, this shows that whilst the back-ups may not necessarily be as strong as the main guy, without the back-ups the main guy can’t move forward. In this case, we have Kiba and Koneko utilising their skills to help Issei move forward. If it weren’t for them, Issei wouldn’t have been able to move through that huge mass.

The visuals in the manga play a critical role during the peak and aftermath of the action. We learn about the chess pieces and fighting roles more in-depth. Rias’ explanations are also demonstrated visually as she talks about the pawn’s role and potential. The images have certainly helped me to understand better. We found out in this volume that it took eight pawn pieces to revive him. This is all because of his power, the Sacred Gear, Boosted Gear.

Speaking of the art, the illustrations demonstrated more of the lighter moments of the manga, like, when Asia eat a hamburger for the first time. Her reactions and showing off her clean hands was the highest peak of cuteness. Another cute and funny moment was when she tried to pray to God, but received a shock to the head (due to her new allegiance to being a devil). Her jealous face was cute too… Still, even if she is jealous, she is still graceful and polite. We need more characters like Asia around.

Everything concluded itself nicely, but wait, a new character is introduced. At the same time Rias is looking dejected and subdued… it seems to me that Rias is in some kind of arranged marriage and she’s engaged to this ugly looking geezer. Haha. I’m sort of hoping something happens between her and Issei. That kiss on the forehead was affectionate and endearing, but, I reckon it would have been better if they smooched. Haha.

  1. CONCLUSION

The chess pieces have been explained appropriately, especially the role of the pawn. Had everything been explained straightaway then I would have found it too confusing.

Visual aids and fight scenes were used to further demonstrate the roles of the fighting pieces. Issei took the limelight, showing everyone that he is the main character and showing that he can attain any rank during the fight. And, the supporting devils supported him as they showed off their abilities in their own way.

One of the main highlights for me was the fight scenes. The fights were constant and set at a good pace. There were some cheeky moments. But, these cheeky moments were not used for the sake of it; they were used since its part of the story.

I was sad when Asia died. But, I was as delighted when Rias brought her back to life. I was concerned that I was not going to like Rias but those worries were quashed. It looks as well that the forbidden romance between Issei and Asia may not be so forbidden after all. It can then turn into a straight romance if Rias approves it.

High School DxD

I’m really enjoying this manga and it has entered into my official top five favourite manga along with Monster Musume and D-Frag. =) Speaking of Monster Musume, since I’m enjoying volume four so much I decided to re-read the whole thing again… it is wonderful. =D I won’t review volume four straight away since I rather not force myself. But, I will review it at least before the release of Volume five.
